What is a weighted blanket?

A weighted blanket (also called a gravity blanket or weighted blanket) is a blanket weighted with small, evenly distributed beads. Ranging from 2 to as much as 15 kilograms. These provide constant, gentle pressure on the body. This principle is known as Deep Pressure Stimulation (DPS).

More explanation about what a weighted blanket is

What does a weighted blanket do?

Deep Pressure Stimulation gives a feeling comparable to a firm hug or a sense of security. It’s similar to swaddling a baby. DPS also affects hormones. It lowers cortisol (stress hormone), which reduces stress and has a calming effect. Additionally, it helps with the production of serotonin (the happiness hormone) and melatonin (the sleep hormone).

What do people use a weighted blanket for?

A weighted blanket is often used by people who have difficulty relaxing or calming down, especially in the evening or during sleep. The even pressure of the blanket can be experienced as pleasant and calming.

People use a weighted blanket for example:

  • with restless or light sleep
  • with a busy or overstimulated feeling
  • during moments of relaxation on the couch
  • as part of a regular sleep routine
  • for sensory processing sensitivity, such as with ADHD or autism (in consultation and with appropriate weight)

Experiences vary per person. What works well for one may feel less comfortable for another. That’s why it’s important to choose a weighted blanket with the right weight and try it out calmly.

Which weighted blanket weight is right for me?

For the best effect, choose the weight of a weighted blanket at about 8–12% of your body weight. This is a guideline; personal preference, sleeping position, and sensitivity to pressure also play a role.

A blanket that is too light has little effect, while a blanket that is too heavy can feel suffocating. That’s why it’s important not to choose “by guesswork.” At Novaline, we indicate for each product which body weight it is suitable for. Weight advice for single-person weighted blankets

Choose about ten percent of your own weight and use this as a starting point. Lighter gives more freedom of movement and feels cooler; heavier gives more pressure and can further reduce restlessness (tossing and turning).

Weighted blanket for children

A weighted blanket can also be pleasant for children, for example with overstimulation, restless sleep, or difficulty relaxing. It is especially important to pay attention to the right weight, the child's age, and safe use. A weighted blanket for children is always lighter and tailored to a smaller body.

Many parents use a weighted blanket as part of a fixed sleep routine or during a rest moment during the day. Experiences vary per child, so it is important to build up slowly and try it out.

How do you use a weighted blanket?

You usually use a weighted blanket directly on the body, preferably without an extra duvet in between. This way, you experience the pressure best. In winter, you can optionally use a light duvet on top for extra warmth. During the day, a weighted blanket is also used on the couch or during a rest moment.

It is normal for your body to need some time to get used to the weight. Some people feel comfortable immediately under a weighted blanket, while others need a few nights to adjust.

Practical tips for comfortable use can be found here

When is a weighted blanket less suitable?

A weighted blanket is not suitable for everyone. Do not use a weighted blanket for babies and young toddlers (under 3 years). Also, caution is advised with certain medical conditions, such as severe respiratory problems or untreated sleep apnea.

Are you unsure if a weighted blanket is suitable for your situation? Consult a doctor or therapist. At Novaline, we are happy to think along with you, but medical decisions should always be made together with a professional.

Weighted blanket in summer

A weighted blanket can also be used in summer. The weight does not automatically cause extra warmth; the blanket largely takes on body temperature and is made of breathable materials. Many people therefore also experience a pleasant and calming feeling under a weighted blanket during warmer periods.
